Understanding Heavy Metal & Environmental Toxin Exposure
Heavy metals and environmental pollutants are present throughout our modern environment, and ongoing exposure may place stress on the body’s natural regulatory systems. Over time, this exposure can influence overall wellbeing and may be associated with a range of health concerns.
How Exposure Can Occur
Toxic substances may enter the body through several common pathways, including:
Inhalation (breathing in airborne particles or vapours)
Ingestion (consumption through food or water)
Dermal absorption (contact through the skin)
Because exposure can occur in everyday environments, it is often cumulative and may go unnoticed over time.
What Happens with Excessive Exposure
When the body is exposed to higher levels of toxins than it can efficiently process and eliminate, accumulation may occur.
These substances can be stored in various tissues, including fat tissue, glandular organs, and in some cases the nervous system.
The liver plays a central role in processing and eliminating toxins from the body.
If the overall toxic load becomes excessive, the body’s natural clearance pathways may become overburdened, allowing compounds to circulate and redistribute into different tissues.
Over time, this may place additional strain on physiological systems and affect normal function.
Why This Matters
Certain heavy metals and environmental toxins have been associated with neurological, hormonal, and metabolic disruption when present at elevated levels.
For example, exposure to mercury has been linked in research to symptoms such as changes in cognition, mood, concentration, energy, and nervous system function. In some cases, these symptoms may resemble other neurological or cognitive conditions, which can make identification complex without appropriate assessment.
Important Considerations
Heavy metal and toxin-related health concerns require careful interpretation and should be managed under the guidance of a qualified healthcare or functional health practitioner.
* It is important to note that general detox approaches may not specifically address heavy metal accumulation and, in some cases, may redistribute toxins within the body if not appropriately supported.
ALL HEAVY METAL & TOXIN TREATMENT PROTOCOLS SHOULD BE DONE UNDER YOUR FUNCTIONAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER'S CARE.
HealthSense uses a small sample of your hair to assess a wide range of items. This is possible because hair shafts are hollow and act as storage vessels for substances carried through the bloodstream—such as antibodies, nutrients, hormones, heavy metals, and more. As these substances circulate in the body, they are deposited from the blood stream into the hair shaft, allowing them to be detected and analysed without the use of invasive testing methods such as blood testing.
